The group ran a 1.5 mile loop from Seaside to the Sewer Plant (aka Water Treatment Facility). In 1976, Hal took a one year leave to teach Marine Science at Key West Community College. As a going away gift/party, his running co-workers affectionately held the "Goforth Memorial Sewer Plant Marathon" on their regular 1.5 mile course. The tradition continues.
That process includes protecting the Navy's intellectual property and ensuring capability is delivered at the lowest possible cost. According to the Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Power Patent Scorecard 2010, US Navy patent portfolio ranks #1 among government agencies worldwide. In fiscal year 2010, SSC Pacific was issued over 40 patents by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). When patents are licensed for commercialization -- a process that allows for large-scale production of a capability needed by the warfighter -- the SSC Pacific inventor gets to share in the royalties.

The competition brought together 22 teams from five countries for the 13th annual event. SPAWAR Systems Center (SSC) Pacific has hosted the competition, which is sponsored by the AUVSI Foundation, the Office of Naval Research and several corporate sponsors, at the Transducer Evaluation Center (TRANSDEC) Pool for the past nine years.

Students had to build and program their own autonomous underwater vehicles that would complete a course of various obstacles including recognizing colors and reacting to sounds. The theme this year was Underwater the 13th – a horror film theme.

Dave Novick, technical director for the competition, said the pool was “Camp TRANSDEC,” with various summer camp-themed obstacles. First, the robots had to get a life jacket (recognize the colored buoys), jump the hedges (move over piping suspended in the water), select tools for weapons (identify shapes), fire a crossbow through the window (launch a torpedo), and finally save the counselor by pulling him out of a cabin (in this case, surface).

“Releasing is new this year,” Novick said. “They have to release the counselor before surfacing.”

He said most of the obstacles rely on visual cues because cameras are cheap and easy to use. But he said he hopes to incorporate a wider variety of challenges in future years.

Also new this year was the SAE International Joint Architecture for Unmanned Systems (JAUS) Interoperability Challenge that accounted for about 15 percent of the total possible points. Teams have had the opportunity to attempt the JAUS Challenge in the past, but it was not an official part of the competition.

The requirement was a late addition to this year’s event, but 11 teams gave it a try. About half of them got a perfect score.

“So much of what they do is on the research and science side,” said Ralph “Woody” English, president of SAE AS-4, a group that publishes documents on JAUS. “We think it challenges them to think about things they will do on the job side.”

The event is open to the public during the qualifying rounds and finals each year.

Steve Koepenick, Deputy of Program Development for SSC Pacific's ISR/IO Competency, Autonomous Systems Division, said the competition is a great opportunity for community outreach.

“When we first did this nine years ago it was obvious to me we could do outreach,” he said. “We can show off our facility, capability and what we do for the community.”

“Plus, the competition helps foster young, bright minds,” he said.

In the past, the Center has hired some of the students who participate in the competition. Just by preparing for the competition, they show that they can work across disciplines, defend their work and apply concepts to real-world applications.

“We hire the best and brightest,” Koepenick said. “(These students would) know what to do when they get here.”

Final results for the competition were as follows:
1st Place - Cornell University
2nd Place - U.S. Naval Academy
3rd Place - University of Maryland
4th Place - Team SONIA -École de Technologie Supérieure
5th Place - Amador Valley High School
6th Place - University of Texas at Dallas
7th Place - Kyushu Institute of Technology
Best Run of Teams Not in Finals: University of Central Florida
Never Give Up Award: Iceland
Best Presentation: San Diego City Robotics
SSC Pacific is recognized worldwide as a leader in command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance in support of the Nation's warfighters.

Serving as host of the AUVSI competition for the last nine years is just one example of the command's commitment to young people who want to learn more about the practical application of science and engineering. In 2009, the command was awarded the Maritime Alliance Educational Outreach Award for its educational outreach efforts.SPAWAR Systems Center Pacifchttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03687352330019511085noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5687513011602231749.post-69685966920844147362010-07-21T01:00:00.000-07:002010-07-21T01:00:01.569-07:00Pac PuzzlerHow about a mental exercise to get you through the week? What's the solution to this Pac Puzzler?

You are a medical researcher and have a presentation in 24 hours for which 12 samples of placebo and 1 sample of vaccine has been prepared. Unfortunately your lab assistant forgot to label any of the samples and now can't remember which is which! On top of that you now only have four lab rats yet to receive the vaccine. You can administer the samples as you wish to the four rats but it will take 23 hours before you can test to see which received the vaccine.

How can you, without a doubt, find the 1 sample of vaccine out of the 13 total unlabeled samples with only four subjects to administer vaccinations to?! Yet some of our neighbors may not know what we do for the U.S. Navy. Local television station, KUSI, spent a few mornings with us during "Good Morning San Diego" and showcased why we're the premier research, development, test, & evaluation (RDT&E) laboratory for command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (C4ISR).

While our labs are chartered to solve problems for our sailors, many of our technologies find use outside of the DoD. For example, the RAPid Image Exploitation Resource (RAPIER) project can scan images from satellites and quickly detect wildfires that endanger our communities, Composeable FORCEnet can facilitate the identification of pirate ships, and our work in the communications sector has led to interoperable communications for First Responders.

Advanced research is still at our core. We've been building a sea water antenna, creating an Advanced Global Navigation Simulator, looking at cryogenic exploitation of radio frequency, building unmanned, semi-autonomous systems, and exploring ways of interacting using the motions of our eGlove.

Of course, none of this innovation could be possible without a strong foundation of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). To ensure the future of STEM disciplines, our Educational Outreach program partners with local school and promotes interest in STEM for the next generation of scientists and engineers.

Capt. Mark Kohlheim, commanding officer of SSC Pacific, was selected as the top executive in the government category.

Ronald Broersma, chief engineer for the IT division at SSC Pacific, received the lifetime achievement award. Broersma also serves as the SPAWAR Network Security Manager and Defense Research and Engineering Network (DREN) Chief Engineer.

Both men said they were honored to accept the awards during the event.

"It's very humbling," Kohlheim said. "It really represents the team. I accept this on behalf of the team."

Broersma, who previously has received government and industry awards for his work, said winning this award was an exciting, new experience.

"This is like nothing I've ever experienced before," he said.

The awards were presented by the San Diego Business Journal and Cox Business.

More than 150 leaders were nominated for the award. Winners were chosen for six categories to honor a public company, private company, nonprofit organization, business nonprofit, government agency and education.

Finalists and honorees received public recognition during the ceremony, receiving a plaque on stage. Honorees also received a trophy and small gift from Cox.

The recognition of two SSC Pacific employees reflects the important role the Department of Defense plays in the greater San Diego region.

According to a report released last month by the San Diego Military Advisory Council (SDMAC), the DoD has an employment impact accounting for nearly one quarter of all regional employment.

And when it comes to information technology, SSC Pacific’s expertise in C4ISR is second to none.

The Department of Defense directly and indirectly accounts for roughly one quarter of all employment in San Diego County. For the leader of the local technology-rich Navy command to win this award reinforces the value and benefit the military brings to the region.

SSC Pacific employs more than 4,200 civilian engineers, scientists, researchers, technical staff and support staff along with more than 230 active duty military personnel and roughly 6,000 industry and academic partners.

The lab partners with the public sector to advance technologies that can be beneficial to both the warfighter and the general public.

SSC Pacific ranked 6th among San Diego-based corporate patent recipients for calendar year 2008 with 24 patents received.

In Fiscal Year 2009, SSC Pacific entered into more than 20 cooperative research and development agreements (CRADAs) that partner the government lab with industry, academic or other government partners to advance research and development of important technologies.

More than 10 CRADAs already are underway for the current fiscal year.
Data collected 40 years ago by the Navy Marine Mammal Program (MMP) at SSC Pacific may open the door to novel approaches in controlling and potentially curing this disease in humans.

People with type 2 diabetes are insulin resistant; their bodies produce insulin but do not use it properly. Because their bodies cannot effectively store glucose, high sugar levels build up in the bloodstream, which can lead to kidney, neurological or cardiovascular damage, or even death.

Dr. Stephanie Venn-Watson, director of clinical research for the National Marine Mammal Foundation (NMMF), recently identified the bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) as an important natural animal model that complements type 2 diabetes in humans.

"This discovery may lead to applicable medicine that will benefit the health of both dolphins and humans," said Dr. Venn-Watson, who worked as the MMP's epidemiologist for seven years but recently transitioned to NMMF.

Dr. Venn-Watson's research began in 2007, using over 1,000 blood samples collected over seven years, as part of an effort to determine normal reference ranges for dolphins fasted overnight. While retrospectively comparing blood samples from recently fed MMP dolphins with dolphins that had not eaten overnight, an interesting and unexpected discovery was made. The blood samples from the fasted dolphins looked similar to samples collected from people with type 2 diabetes. However, once those same dolphins were fed, they changed back to a non-diabetic state.

"We concluded that dolphins have a diabetes-like metabolism that appears to switch on with fasting and off with feeding. Interestingly, an abnormality has been reported in a fasting gene found in people with type 2 diabetes that causes the switch to remain on. If humans could have control over diabetes with a fasting switch, similar to dolphins, this may advance efforts to cure diabetes," said Venn-Watson.

This finding led to follow-on research efforts and the discovery of MMP data from dolphin feeding studies conducted in the 1970s. Hourly blood and urine values were collected for 24 hours from a set of dolphins fed either sugar or protein.

"Dolphins fed sugar had hyperglycemia lasting at least 10 hours, similar to people with diabetes, but had good glucose control with a high-protein, low-sugar meal," said Venn-Watson. A steady supply of blood glucose is required by the large brains of primates, including humans, and cetaceans, including dolphins. As a means to transport the needed amounts of sugar to the brain, adult red blood cells found in only these two species among all animal groups have evolved to become extremely permeable to glucose.

"These physiological similarities between dolphins and humans may help explain why both have the potential for type 2 diabetes, a glucose-driven disease," said Venn-Watson.

Primates and cetaceans may share similarities in their development of insulin resistance. Prior to the last ice age, carbohydrate-rich primate diets provided a steady supply of blood glucose to the brain. Upon switching to a high-protein, low-sugar diet forced by lack of plant material, primates may have developed insulin resistance as a mechanism to conserve blood sugar.

Similarly, when cetaceans transitioned from land to ocean animals 55 million years ago, they also likely switched from a high-carbohydrate to a high-protein, low-sugar fish diet and, just like humans, may have developed insulin resistance to keep sugar in their blood.

Unlike humans, however, dolphins continue to eat fish and use insulin resistance to their advantage, while people have reverted back to a high-carbohydrate diet. Dietary sugar, combined with an insulin gene that remains on, leads to a surplus of blood sugar and creates diabetes.

"Understanding how and why insulin resistance has evolved in dolphins, and discovering how dolphins control their fasting switch will not only directly benefit dolphin health, but may provide clues to treating diabetes in humans," Venn-Watson said. "We're actively seeking collaboration with the diabetes research community to further this work.SPAWAR Systems Center Pacifchttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03687352330019511085noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5687513011602231749.post-23949494092615391142010-04-22T10:33:00.000-07:002010-04-22T10:33:25.616-07:00SSC Pacific Celebrates Earth Day

Every contribution counts to save our environment, and SPAWAR Systems Center Pacific is continuing its efforts to promote a sustainable environment. Teams from San Diego, Alaska, Hawaii, Michigan, and Pennsylvania competed in this event, totaling 49 teams and over 1,000 participants, students, mentors, and coaches.

This year's event focused on the challenge known as "Breakaway." Watch the FIRST game designers explain the complexities of Breakaway.
